Hello, this is Golden Lady. I am a NY attorney and UK solicitor, and I joined LexDAO, the Legal Engineering Guild, in March 2022, hoping to learn legal engineering. The main LexDAO Discord server has been mostly inactive since the end of 2024. But despite the fact that things have been quiet, people have been working on things, in their own way, including myself, as well as others. Because we are seeing a new narrative being pushed for Legal Engineering, and massively funded by BigAI, I decided to take the initiative and use my agentic superpowers courtesy of Gemini Notebook to document a history of LexDAO based on public record. This amazing initiative deserves its spotlight. Legal Engineering is much older than BigAI.
To capture the rich history of LexDAO’s community and its technical milestones, I started by organizing and synthesizing the YouTube assets I was able to find into a cohesive chronological and thematic narrative. The recordings available on YouTube from the pre-BigAI Era (and therefore 100% human) span several years from the guild's inception in 2019 to late 2024.
LexDAO YouTube Historical Archive & Chronology
1. The Inception & Founding Ideals (2019–2020)
The early philosophies, the transition from traditional law to code, and the summoning of the guild dated from 2019 and 2020.
The Transition to Coded Contracts: Based on Ross Campbell's panel at BAF & SF DeGov. It documents Ross's personal pivot from corporate big law associate to Solidity coder and his thesis that traditional legal intermediaries must be automated out. Summoning LexDAO: Based on the DAO Rush Week 2020 panel that you can watch here. It traces the division of LexDAO into "LexCorp" (Delaware C-Corp for client projects) and "LexDAO Community" (a Wyoming unincorporated nonprofit association or UNA), alongside the launch of early smart contracts like LexLocker. 2. Legal Engineering, Custom Wrappers, & Kali (2021–2022)
The attempts to reconcile paper laws with "world computer" smart contracts.
The Concept of "Legal Engineering": Based on LegalTechLIVE Episode 103. It features early members James McCall, Adam Kerpelman, and Ross Campbell defining the distinct professional identity of a legal engineer, as an expert working in the Venn diagram between software engineering and corporate transaction law. Wyoming's DAO LLC Act & Code Deference: Based on Laura Shin's Unchained Podcast. It details Aaron Wright and Ross Campbell explaining how Wyoming extended LLC status to DAOs, comparing Delaware wrappers to algorithmic/managerless structures, and introducing "code deference". Watch here.
The Automation of Legal Wrappers (Kali): Based on the Chainist Meetup - see here - and DAOPlanet Reveal - watch here. It explains the mechanics of Kali, instant on-chain LLC/UNA deployments, "qualified deference" (having a legal fail-safe for consensus exploits), and using NFT wrappers to hold real-world assets. All valid legal innovations that we still haven’t deployed at scale.
3. Gamifying Legal Tech & Metaverse (2022–2023)
LexDAO's cultural experiments with education, identity, and decentralized credentials.
LexDAO in CryptoVoxels: Based on Scott Stevenson's ("tenfinney") MetaMedia presentation you can watch here. It covers the development of LexDAO’s token-gated virtual parcel, mock on-chain courtrooms, and using NFTs as cryptographically secure credentials/badges.
Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR): Based on Web3Skills SmartLaw Metaverse Demo - see full playlist here. It looks at the early design of on-chain arbitration agreements and "wet-dry" hybrid contracts.
4. The Regulatory Era & Meta-Governance (2024)
A more sophisticated global focus as regulators stepped into Web3.
The Wyoming DUNA Act: Based on the LexDAO DUNA Session, where Paolo Maria Gangi moderated a panel including David Kerr, Miles Jennings, General Counsel and Head of Decentralization at a16z, Jordan Teague, and Ramona Tudorancea, founder of JupiterBlock Ventures and partner at Ixian Group, offering an offshore perspective from the Cayman Islands. The session deconstructs the Decentralized Unincorporated Nonprofit Association (DUNA) law, analyzing how it shields developers/token holders and handles tax/securities compliance. Kleros & On-Chain Arbitration: Based on the Kleros & Arbitration Session. The panelists, besides Paolo as moderator were Ines Braganza, Stephen Palley, Alexandre Perez, Alexandru Stanescu and Facundo Trotz. The Session analyzed on-chain dispute resolution frameworks and the philosophical debate between subjective human discretion and game-theoretic staking. You can watch it here.
Q Blockchain & Multi-Layered Governance: Based on the Q Blockchain Session. It outlines Q's decentralized governance constitutions and details LexClinic’s active role as a "root node" supervisor.
MiCA, CASPs, & Reverse Solicitation: Based on the MiCA Study Groups, available on the most recent LexDAO YouTube Page. These four sessions explored European Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) rules, stablecoin/ART regimes, and the international rules of reverse solicitation for offshore crypto projects.
