The LEETH Certification (or Legal Engineering Certification) was LexDAO’s formal credentialing framework designed to validate a practitioner’s dual competency in both corporate/transactional law and Solidity/smart contract programming. Below is a breakdown of what the certification entailed, how it was earned, and why it mattered to the guild. Or, you can check it out yourself on GitHub here.
1. Purpose: Formalizing a New Profession
In the early days of LexDAO, members recognized that neither traditional law schools nor standard coding bootcamps prepared professionals to bridge the gap between traditional legal prose ("wet-ink") and self-executing code ("firm-code"). The LEETH certification was an attempt to establish a recognized standard for Certified Legal Engineers, proving that an individual could write secure smart contracts while contemplating their real-world legal and regulatory consequences.
2. The Evaluation Process: "Soul-Searching" & Practical Work
Unlike traditional bar exams that rely on multiple-choice testing, LEETH was earned through hands-on, peer-reviewed execution:
Ad-Hoc Peer Review: Ross Campbell described the certification as an ad-hoc, "soul-searching" evaluation where senior guild members observed candidates building real-world projects to ensure their output advanced the state of legal engineering.
Mentor-Apprentice Framework: Candidates participated in 1-to-4-week apprenticeship sprints. A law student and a software developer were often paired together to cross-train each other, submit problem briefs, and complete weekly standup reviews.
Earning LXX & CRED Tokens: Apprentices earned LXX tokens or NFT CREDs by contributing to public goods, such as crowdsourcing redlines for the Wyoming DAO legislation, writing contract documentation in LexCorpus, or building open-source legal tools. Reaching milestone thresholds (e.g., earning 10+ LXX tokens or specific CRED achievements) qualified the candidate for certification.
Governance Ratification: Formal certifications were submitted as proposals to LexDAO's governance multi-sigs or Snapshot (e.g. proposals like "give cattin leeth!") to be officially granted by the community.
3. Cryptographic Badges & Web3 Credentials
Once certified, the LEETH credential was issued as an on-chain NFT badge:
Verifiable Web3 Resume: The token served as permanent, cryptographically verifiable proof of competency on a member's Web3 resume, listed publicly in LexDAO's Legal-Engineers repository and directory. You can still see the page here.
Directory Verification: Clients or DAOs looking for verified cryptolawyers could check a wallet address against the LexDAO directory to instantly verify their credentials.
4. Guild Privileges
Earning LEETH conferred specific rights and roles within the LexDAO ecosystem:
Private Channels & Governance: Access to "LEETH-Only" Discord channels and specialized governance votes.
Referrals & Consultations: Eligibility to take on paid consulting requests, triage #find-a-lawyer inquiries, or participate in office hours through the guild's platform model.
Mentorship & Supervision: Certified members could act as supervisors for law students in the LexClinic apprenticeship program.
By 2022, LexDAO had certified over 20 legal engineers under this system, laying the groundwork for how Web3 organizations establish peer-reviewed technical credentials.
